Facial recognition for weddings: how it really works

One selfie, and all your photos appear. Here's how, in plain terms, AI recognises faces in a wedding album.

"How can it know it's me?" That's the question most guests ask themselves the first time they take a selfie to find their wedding photos. The answer comes down to a few steps, with no magic or mystery — just artificial intelligence applied to a very concrete problem: finding a face among hundreds of photos.

Step 1: turning a face into a mathematical fingerprint

When a photo is uploaded to the gallery, an algorithm first detects every face present in the image — even several at once in a group photo. For each detected face, it then computes a kind of "signature": a set of measurements (distance between the eyes, nose shape, facial structure…) turned into a series of numbers, called a vector. This signature doesn't "see" your identity — it just describes the geometry of the face.

Step 2: comparing your selfie to every signature

When you scan the QR code and take your selfie, the algorithm computes the same signature for your face, then mathematically compares it to every signature already computed for the gallery's photos. The "closer" two signatures are (in a mathematical sense), the more likely they belong to the same person. Within seconds, the algorithm shows you only the photos where your face was recognised with a high level of confidence.

Recognition works even if you're in profile, partly hidden, or in the background of a group photo — the algorithm works on the geometry of the face, not on a fixed pose facing the camera.

And what about privacy?

Your selfie is only used to compute your signature at the time of the search: it isn't stored, shared, or used for any other purpose. Facial recognition only activates with your explicit consent, and galleries are hosted in Europe in compliance with GDPR. You remain in control of your photos, and can request their deletion at any time.

In practice, for your wedding, this means you have nothing to configure manually: you import the photos, your guests scan the QR code and take a selfie, and the AI does the rest in the background — while you enjoy your celebration.
